Brighter Monday
Good morning good people. So world cup is over, wives girlfriends and mistresses are a happy lot...not forgetting the domestic managers who assume the C.E.O positions once we step out of those doors. The break is over...or is it...I have been told EPL is starting soon (not really a soçcer fan but man gotta stay relevant) Needless to say..."We as team france"..With my cousin Umtiti and my younger bro Mbappe.. Tulishinda hio kitu.
It was a nice distraction for the last couple of days. We however haven't forgotten about the " poisonous sugar" scandal..the maize scandal...NYS...Busia county misappropriation of funds...SGR...Lifestyle audit...Razed school dormitories.. in fact I will stop there because everything in Kenya is a scandal. Even this world cup came with its own shares of scandal...yani we struggled to beat deadlines filling returns then some senators and people of "power" decided its too much and they could pinch kidogo and go spoil themselves in Russia.....well as they say nowadays. ..Bora uhai! But you people need to get fashion advice. ..your dresscode was whack even though you were representing Kenyans ...not at will. Pun intended.
Being beginning of the week...I have probably recited all my Novena prayers...noted down my weekly goals and how I intend to achieve them ...then I will casually walk to a cyber cafe in those dark corners of town in my gikosh suit.... "kutafta kazi pia ni kazi". I will be sending my 157,089th job application today. ..yeah and I will be looking relevant while at it. Fake it till you make it no? I know I will meet Otieno in town too dangling keys he picked from his uncle's garage in Grogon for that beamer that is lying on its belly..."Hi ni Nairobi!" he will say....like its his mantra or something.
Apparently that is the life for a considerable amount of young folks in the city. You either running around town with envelopes of your "CV and other credentials" or running around showing people how to make 10k online using just your phone (this is the oldest joke in the book)..or chilling at a corner in Inda waiting for some people to finish their shift so you can get lucky and be taken in on the next...or on a Telaviv matatu.. (kuchapa squad ) Then we will meet later at Kevo's place in Umo... deliberate about it. ..changa for a mzinga.. ask Kama to get us some gomba from Eastliegh when he finishes up from loading goods on a truck for some Patel.
Around 4pm we will be sitted at Kevos balcony in those not so well lit residential apartments... A group of intelligent "entrepreneurs" with degrees from various universities in the country. We will talk about anything and everything...gomba and a mzinga of crazy cock being the fuel of this conversations. We tried to get a youth loan for one of Kama's crazy inventions but we only got 35k.. we needed 350k. So we took that money and "invested" it in Aim Global. ...still waiting for our Audis and G wagons. We talk about our other failed ventures and all those interviews we went to and they needed 7 years experience yet we just graduated the other day. We hatch up plans to survive. ..don't you know "Hi ni Nairobi! " We shall see better days.
As the party is breaking up Oriso calls...this one we call him mjanja wa Nairobi. He is that guy that has "chafuad shingo" with so many chains and medallions they actually add up a kilo or two to his actual weight. "Rada? Nko form tao inakuaje?" And bang! We just got mpango on a Monday night.... You only live once....ama namna gani?
We grab our jackets and head out.. just as we are approaching the stage... Gunshots!! We scamper everyone for themselves... as soon as everyone is in a safe spot... calls...calls.. "Brathe? Ngori?" So ma "mwewe" were doing their usual rounds in the hood following a tip off...an operation was supposed to go down. We circle back just to get the news first hand... We get to Kama's the door is locked... we call...the phone goes unanswered... Panic mode... Brayo, a neighbours kid comes running to us.... " Wasee ni Kama ameangushwa!"... It hits hard and painfull..
But its just another day in this streets. Hii ni Nairobi....Ofcourse they will plant a gun on him...say he was a wanted criminal and put out an Apb for us...his "crew" so just like that we go "chini ya maji". He will be buried on Wednesday...but we won't go to Kirinyaga.. we will meet up somewhere else and eulogize him..for we knew him better but we can't talk about it without following the same road.
As I get on to this bus to Ocha.I cant help but shed a tear..but then I got hope...There shall be a brighter Monday. ..not just for me...not just for my friends but for every jobless youth who has been strangled by the system. We shall rise.
