Hash Tag Dont Play Kenyan MUSIC
....well until they get their shit together ..Kenyan music is just that...Kenyan music.(shrugs)
"Music is the heartbeat that i feel in my soul," I don't quite remember who wrote that line in the first place but i guess they had my interests at heart.
I'm not the one to jump onto waves but I feel this one needs to be nipped in the bud. There's this hullabaloo on social sites with the hashtag Play Kenyan Music, what are we doing so wrong as a community that we now have to force music down listeners throats? So now we have to follow up music with a hashtag for it to get played or attack radio presenters and deejays just for airplay? Pathetic right?
Music is an art, for some of us it is the answer!! Music, good music rather gets us through those dark moments, gets us to make memories, feel good, educates us and sharpens our wit most of the time..so yeah we live and breathe music its just a pity we would never make it out as musicians so we settled to listening to it. Music just like any other work of art should capture emotions and speak to the masses... " They say music can alter moods and talk to you."
I grew up listening to Hip-hop and back in the day Music was a tool for communication. Rap was a voice against oppression and played a major role in speaking against injustice on the Black community and it generally gave them more to identify themselves with. In the times of N.W.A,Pac , method man, KRS One Warren G, Biggie etc rappers earned the respect of their audience because they spoke to what they needed to hear, they moved the masses, then came the wave and everybody wanted to rap and a culture was born and its still in existence till date...Consistency !!
Pop culture has existed since before I was born not just because people liked it but because it appealed to the masses...music is supposed to make us feel good right? Ain't that why we listen to good music?
Music has evolved since time immemorial, coming closer home we have our own afro beats, The south Africans got it right on this one, the Nigerians followed suit and so did the Ghanaians and the Tanzanians, You can distinctly identify each from a group of music,consistency again!

They came up with a wave, called it Kapuka, the tunes were about life of the party and living like it was our last, Who doesn't like to have fun? So we had fun for a while but we got bored of the same old tune, and this is where shit hit the fan pretty fast. Everyone was trying to prove their relevance in the industry, It became a battle of who could do it better, who could copy and paste better bla bla bla, Coming to think of it, I think Kenyans only do music to get paid thats why someone would get into a studio say the same words for over three minutes and go home feeling like the best thing that happened to the music industry after LPs and recorders.
I remember while i was young and the beat dropped everybody would lose themselves in the music and sing along to Whitney Houston, LL cool J and SWV. I wonder how many folks can sing along to Timmy Tdat and that new school crowd they got these days.
Don't get me wrong, There's still artistes that are performing exemplary well, there's artistes putting in work and maintaining standards. I applaud them keep on keeping on. Chema cha jiuza...so until y'all make some music that got content and is uniquely identified, until you stop borrowing beats and start being creative with your lyrics, until you stop promoting nudity and leud content,until your mothers can sing along to the shit you are forcing down our throats ..take that hashtag and shove it up your A.
Leave the studio and come earn a living like the rest of us are doing. Get a job start a business do something do not mess up music for the rest of us.
